FELA THE GREAT

Untold Story of Fela Kuti

For the fifty-eight years he lived on earth, the Fela Kuti mystique kept the world on the edge of their seats. There was always something out of the ordinary in everything he did. From the rebel streak in him, which was constantly dramatised, to the zombifying lyrics in his music, which constantly gave successive Nigerian military governments the jitters, and, of course, his harem of wives, which exaggerated his machismo, Fela Kuti symbolized a cat with nine lives, and, certainly, a cat that touched many lives in Nigeria and beyond.

If you think you have heard everything about the Afrobeat maestro, who, contrary to his parents’ advice for him to study medicine in London, chose to study music at the Trinity College of Music, you could just be like a nitwit whose idea of scientific grandeur is only limited to the gigantic Egyptian pyramid.
Needless to say, you need to read the latest book on Fela, Kalakuta Diaries, written by his erstwhile PRO, Uwa Erhabor, presented to the public early this week at the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, Lagos.
Unlike other books on Fela that has dwelled on his stage performances, interpretation of his lyrics and political activism, Kalakuta Diaries recounts the untold story of life in Fela’s Kalakuta Republic, his symbolic free world, where those in military fatigue weren’t welcome and even some sane citizens could be charged for jaywalking. Kalakuta Diaries tells stories of the seamy side of life in Fela’s iconoclastic home and lot more.
z
It could be outlawed elsewhere, but smoking of weeds wasn’t in his republic – of course he prefers to call it “African grass” – and if you couldn’t charge cows and goats for grazing on grass, why should you charge Fela for feasting on nature’s grassy environment?
That was his contention, but the Nigerian government didn’t just buy into his grassy defence. Marijuana has been outlawed in Nigeria for many decades, and Fela wasn’t to be treated like a scared cow. On many occasions, the minions of the law were after the Afrobeat king, and the lead-up to his arrest and arraignment in court was always melodramatic
.
Fela-Kuti
Don’t forget, no Nigerian soldier, soon after it was released, loved his song, Zombie. The song’s lyrics of ‘Zombie no go unless you tell am to go/ Zombie no go stop unless you tell am to stop’ was a scathing commentary on their soulless lives and that of total submission to the military command – to maim and kill without compunction. On one particular occasion, a group of soldiers, led by the late Major General Musa Bamaiyi, was nosing about in the Kalakuta Republic to get a whiff of him smoking marijuana in order to arraign him and possibly put him behind bars.
That opportunity came when the cops caught him red-handed one day with a mould of marijuana. To them, that was it: the maverick musician would soon be cut out from the world and, therefore, wouldn’t trouble anybody anymore or serve as a negative influence on the youths.

But Fela could play the James Bond sometimes, and so he did. Aware that catching him with prohibited marijuana was too empirical an evidence to be condoned, Fela instantly swallowed the stuff. The cops were perplexed by his brazen attitude, beat him up and whisked him away to the dreaded Alagbon police station. But another drama was yet to unfurl. The police and the nation waited for Fela to defecate the swallowed marijuana, but he didn’t twenty-four hours later.
If only he could do that, thought the police, it would be an incriminating evidence to nail him. Aware of that possibility, Fela’s mum, the late Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, decided to take over preparation of his food in detention. Cleverly, she fed him with vegetable soup with little garri thrice a day, and, on the third day, Fela eventually defecated, but no marijuana was detected in the faeces! What was the miracle?

His daily ration of vegetable soup had dissolved the marijuana. Thus, Fela was let go. This and other weird stories are contained in the new book. “In my 31 years of legal practice, Fela has been one of my most wonderful and intelligent clients,” said his former lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), at the launch of Kalakuta Diaries. “He was one client who deliberately committed criminal offence and his cases were the toughest yet easiest to handle, because he would make it easier for you.”
It sounded incredible yet true that Fela had no house of his and a car before he died, said Falana, who also revealed that he didn’t leave behind riches but integrity. The new book was sponsored by Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, who said he had to do that, because “anything on Fela is an automatic ‘yes’ from me.”
Speaking at the book launch, he recounted how he met Fela the first time as a university student in the UK in the 1960s and fell in love with his music. “When we were bored in our days as students in the UK, we always found consolation in Fela’s band and we felt nostalgic about Highlife music in Nigeria.”
He also disclosed that, on his return to Nigeria in 1969, Fela’s Afrobeat music took over him. If we want to break the stereotype about Nigeria, Promasidor’s MD, Kim Roland, the chief launcher at the vent, said we have to write more books like Kalakuta Diaries, because Nigeria has limited written history about it and its peoples.

For Yinka Odumakin, the greatest wealth anybody can leave is integrity and a good name and those behind to take after him, and Fela, he said, was a genius in that regard.
The author of the book, Erhabor, said it was saddening that people in the western world have to remind us how great Fela was before we begin to celebrate him. Vouching for the contents of the book, Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, said, though some of the things in the book sound exaggerated, they are real, indeed. More than two decades after he died, Fela’s music has continued to capture the imagination of the world, not just because of its twang of resistance but in its powerful lyrical dancing effects.

Fela, as an undergrad in London, formed his first band, Koola Lobitos, which invented Afrobeat music, a variation of Highlife music that fuses jazz, funk, rock and traditional African rhythms and chants. A non-conformist, contrary to pop music norm, many of his songs last more than 20 minutes and his live performances, which he dubbed the “Underground Spiritual Game” was the epitome of showmanship.
Following the release of Zombie album, Nigerian soldiers invaded the Kalakuta Republic, beat him mercilessly, burnt his studio and destroyed his instruments and master tapes, killed his mother, as well. Never to be intimidated, he wrote two nasty songs “Coffin for Head of State” and “Unknown Soldier”. He soldiered on till the end in 1997

Pope Francis wants Church to be poor, and for the poor

Pope Francis, giving his clearest indication yet that he wants a more austere Catholic Church, said on Saturday that it should be poor and remember that its mission is to serve the poor. Francis, speaking
mostly off-the-cuff and smiling often, made his comments in an audience for journalists where he explained why he chose to take the name Francis, after St. Francis of Assisi, a symbol of peace, austerity and poverty.

He called Francis "the man who gives us this spirit of peace, the poor man", and added: "Oh, how I would like a poor Church, and for the poor."
Since his election on Wednesday as the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years, Francis has signaled a sharp change of style from his predecessor, Benedict, and has laid out a clear moral path for the 1.2-billion-member Church, which is beset by scandals, intrigue and strife.
He thanked the thousands of journalists who had covered his election but invited them to "always try to better understand the true nature of the Church, and even its journey in the world, with its virtues and with its sins".
He urged journalists to seek "truth, goodness and beauty" in the world and in the Church.
Francis has set a forceful moral tone and given clear signs already that he will bring a new broom to the crisis-hit papacy, favoring humility and simplicity over pomp and grandeur.
He recalled how on Wednesday night, as he was receiving more and more votes in the conclave, the cardinal sitting next to him, Claudio Hummes of Brazil, comforted him "as the situation became dangerous".
After the voting reached the two-thirds majority that elected him, applause broke out. Hummes, 78, then hugged and kissed him and told him "Don't forget the poor", the pope recounted, often gesturing with his hands.
"That word entered here," he added, pointing to his head.
While the formal voting continued, the pope recalled: "I thought of wars .... and Francis (of Assisi) is the man of peace, and that is how the name entered my heart, Francis of Assisi, for me he is the man of poverty, the man of peace, the man who loves and protects others." It was the latest indication that the pope wanted the worldwide Church to take on an austere style.
On the night he was elected he shunned the papal limousine and travelled on a bus with other cardinals. He went to the Church-run hotel where he had been staying before the conclave and insisted on paying the bill.
Francis, the former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, has also urged Argentines not to make costly trips to Rome to see him but to give the money to the poor instead.
RESPECT NATURE
St. Francis of Assisi, who died in 1226, renounced his family's fortune for a life of charity and poverty and is also revered by environmentalists because he loved nature and preached to animals.
"Right now, we don't have a very good relation with creation," the pope said.
He said that Catholics should remember that Jesus, not the pope, was the centre of the Church. At the end of his address, switching from Italian into Spanish, he also made a gesture to non-believers and members of other religions.
"I told you I would willingly give you a blessing. Since many of you do not belong to the Catholic Church and others are non-believers, from the bottom of my
heart I give this silent blessing to each and every one of you, respecting the conscience of each one of you but knowing that each one of you is a child of God. May God bless all of you," he said.
CONTRAST WITH BENEDICT
The Vatican has strongly denied accusations by some critics in Argentina that Francis stayed silent during systematic human rights abuses by the former military dictatorship in his home country. Spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told reporters on Friday that the accusations "must be clearly and firmly denied".
Critics of Bergoglio, the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires, allege he failed to protect priests who challenged the dictatorship earlier in his career, during the 1976-1983 "dirty war", and that he has said too little about the complicity of the Church during military rule.
The new pope's outgoing nature and sense of humor differs notably from the much more formal Benedict, who last month became the first pope in 600 years to resign.
On Friday, Francis hugged cardinals, slapped them on the back, broke into animated laughter and blessed religious objects one cardinal pulled out of a plastic shopping bag.
The Vatican said Francis would visit Benedict on March 23 at the papal summer residence south of Rome where the former pontiff will live until he moves into a convent in the Vatican which is undergoing renovations.

My Oga At The Top”- The Shameful Aftermath

2
The Lagos state commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp(NSCDC) who made quite a blunder on national television, Obafaiye Shem, has been temporarily suspended as a result of the entire “My Oga At The Top” ruckus.
According to Vanguard, he was suspended after pressure emerged from the supervising ministry over his conduct at the interview in Lagos.
In the viral video making the rounds on numerous social networks, Obafaiye was interviewed by reporters on the  Channels Television breakfast programme – Sunrise Daily and he could not mention the name of his organisation’s website. He was initially unwilling to divulge the information claiming that his “Oga At The Top” might reveal another version of it.He appeared to simply be covering up his ignorance of his organization’s website by saying that it would be revealed by his Oga at the top.
The hilarious video has sparked a T-shirt campaign and a music video. The original video has also been remixed and a game called “My Oga At The Top” has been created byKuluya.com.
Sources reveal that Shem’s wife forcefully entered Channels TV studio recently to protest bitterly to the chairman of Channels, what the shameful video has done to her family. According to Brimtime.com, she said that her kids were being ridiculed at school by their peers and that neighbours and fellow market women taunt her constantly. She also added that her husband hardly sleeps at night again because of the terrible embarrassment and constant harrassment he receives as a result of the video.
Since the video went viral, “My Oga At The Top” has been a feature of almost every joke in the country. On BBM, Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, Radio and TV, people can’t seem to get enough of this joke.
The advent of this embarrassing video has left the Shem family at the bitter receiving end.
Fellow Nigerians, isn’t it time we give this joke a rest since it is having an adverse effect on the family of the man concerned?

UNIABUJA Students To Be Moved To Other Universities To Complete Degree

Engineering students of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) who have been protesting for several months over non-accreditation of their programme would be relocated to other universities to complete their studies within the next few months.
Already, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has met with prospective universities that could re-absorb these Engineering students who have refused to let other students of the university write their examinations, insisting their faculty must gain accreditation first.
But federal government said yesterday it wanted to meet with the parents and affected students for their stamp of approval on the decision.

Minister of education Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i while meeting with a delegation of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) led by the President Yinka Gbadebo said the university could secure accreditation for the programme in the “next few months” but the “the problem is the students who are in the university now.”
“We are looking at the possibility if we cannot absorb them in the system because they have reached certain level of their academic career, we are considering on taking them to our various universities so they can graduate safely and we can put a stop to this problem,” he said

A number of celebrities have taken to Twitter to show their support for Lil Wayne. The 30-year-old rapper – whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr – is recovering in hospital following a seizure last week and although he insists he is doing well, his famous pals have been posting supportive messages on the micro-blogging website. In response to his message, which read “I’m good everybody. Thx for the prayers and love (sic),” Paris Hilton wrote: “Great to hear, was so worried. Love you Wayne (sic).”
Pregnant Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie wrote: “My prayers go out to Lil Wayne & his family tonight. #PrayForWeezy @LilTunechi (sic),” while Jay Sean added “Sending all my prayers and love to Lil Wayne (@LilTunechi)right now.u gon be aight brother. @BIRDMAN5STAR my thoughts are with u bro. Love (sic).”
Last week’s seizure wasn’t Lil Wayne’s first health scare; the ‘Lollipop’ rapper was taken ill on a flight in October which saw his private jet forced to make an emergency landing in Texas where he was then rushed to hospital.
At the time of the incident, a representative claimed he had suffered “severe migraine and dehydration” rather than a seizure.

40-year old mother pregnant for son, ready to marry him

05 March 2013

A 40 –year old mother and her son may be considered to have done the unthinkable by falling in love with each other. And now they want to marry since the mom, is six months pregnant and expecting her

Mbereko, who was widowed 12 years ago, has been cohabiting with her first child, Farai Mbereko (23). She confirms that she is six months pregnant and that she has decided it is better to "marry" her son because she does not want to marry her late husband's young brothers, whom she says are coveting her.
Betty stunned a village court last week when she said the affair with her son had begun three years earlier. She said after spending a lot of money sending Farai to school following the death of her husband, she felt she had a right to his money and no other woman was entitled to it.
"Look, I strove alone to send my son to school and no one helped me. Now you see that my son is working and you accuse me of doing something wrong. "Let me enjoy the products of my sweat," she told the village court.
Farai said he was more than prepared to marry his mother and would pay off the ilobola balance his father had left unpaid to his grandparents. "I know my father died before he finished paying the bride price and I am prepared to pay it off," he said.
"It is better to publicise what is happening because people should know that I am the one who made my mother pregnant. Otherwise they will accuse her of promiscuity."
But local headman Nathan Muputirwa says: "We cannot allow this to happen in our village, mashura chaiwo aya, (This is a bad omen indeed).
In the past they would have to be killed but today we cannot do it because we are afraid of the police." He warned them to break off their marriage or leave his village.
They chose the latter and have left the village to an unknown destination.

Post UTME would not be Scrapped – Education Minister

The federal Government has said that it would not scrap the Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME).
Minister of Education, Prof Ruquayyatu Ahmed Rufa’I, spoke on Tuesday in Abuja when the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) visited her.
She said with the introduction of e-testing, the Federal Ministry of Education is making effort to strengthen Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) as well as making it the most competent examination body in the country.
The minister said: “JAMB is still a competent examination body, the Post- UTME was introduced to help checkmate malpractice and get quality students.
“For now, Post-UTME will still go on until we achieve our aim which is total sanitization and eradication of all forms of examination malpractice from the system.”
She said though Nigerians are yet to grasp the effectiveness of JAMB electronic testing, but with time it would be accepted.
On the crisis rocking the University of Abuja, the minister said: “It is sad as the institution, which is supposed to be a premier university, given its location, is turning to be the worst in the country.”
She, however, assured that in the next few months, the Engineering Department of the university would get the required accreditation, but on the interim and with the full support of the students, they would be distributed to other institutions.
Earlier, NANS urged full implementation of the 2013 education budget, even as the students’ body asked the Federal Government to cancel the Post- UME, which it described as means of defrauding Nigerian students by school management.
The students’ body, led by its National President, Hon Yinka Gbedebo, commended the Federal Government for surmounting the numerous challenges bedevilling the nation’s education sector.

JAMB Sells Over 1.6 Million JAMB Forms Ahead Of 2013 JAMB UTME

JAMB Sells Over 1.6 Million JAMB Forms Ahead Of 2013 JAMB UTME

JAMB Sells Over 1.6 Million JAMB Forms Ahead Of 2013 JAMB UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), on Thursday said over 1.6 million forms had been purchased for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) scheduled for April.
The Public Relations Officer of the Board, Mr Fabian Benjamin, said this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Benjamin told NAN that of the figure, 90.000 candidates would be tested with the newly introduced Computer Based Test (CBT) and Dual Based Test (DBT).
He said that already, the board had put in place strategies that would ensure a hitch free examination across the 3,000 centres nationwide.
According to him, the sale of forms is expected to end on Friday March 15, while the website used for the sale will be closed on March 24.
“We have concluded arrangements for the takeoff of the 2013 UTME examination which will commence on April 27, for candidates for the Pencil Paper Test (PPT).
“We are currently trying to adjust the examination date for the Computer Based Test (CBT) and Dual Based Test (DBT) candidates because the date for coincides with the 2013 May/June WAEC and NECO examination dates.
“I cannot say precisely when it will take place for now until we are through with the adjustment so that it does not cause any clash for the candidates but as soon as this is achieved, we shall communicate to all those concerned,” he said.
He said that the number of candidates that had so far applied for this year’s examination was higher than that of 2012 which, according to him, was put at 1.4 million nationwide.
Benjamin told NAN that the board was looking forward to a hitch-free examination with an almost zero level of examination malpractice in view of the logistics that would be deployed.
“We have written to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, applying for a deployment of their men for the examination.
“We are looking forward to having at least two of these security officers in each of the centres nationwide, to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free examination,” Benjamin said.
The PRO noted that with the introduction of the CBT, there would be no incidence of examination malpractice or rowdiness which characterised previous examinations.
According to him, candidates sitting for the CBT will have their results promptly released to them after the examination.
“With the introduction of the CBT, there will be no incidence of examination malpractice, impersonation and rowdiness that is usually the case with the PPT mode.
“Writing the examination through the CBT is as easy as using one’s phone to make calls.
“With the introduction of the CBT, we are gradually phasing out the PPT which we expect to be completely abolished by 2015,” Benjamin said.
He urged candidates to get themselves meaningfully engaged in readiness for the examination.

Veteran Actor justus esiri is Dead

(Dr. Sids dad)

Another day another incredibly sad news. Legendary actor Justus Esiri has died. The Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), famous for his role as the Village Headmaster in popular 80's sitcom of the same name, passed on last night. No details yet on the cause of death, but will update you guys as soon as I know something. Justus Esiri has featured in several Nollywood movies and is the father of Mavin artist, Dr Sid. May his soul rest in peace...Amen.

Why you should have sex a lot!

Okay, we know sex is all about having pleasure. But it turns out it’s good for your health, too. Meagan Morris of the Cosmopolitan asked Dr Jennifer Landa, chief medical officer of BodyLogicMD and author of The Sex Drive Solution for Women to give insight into the health benefits of sex, and here they are. Have fun.

 It boosts your brain
SEX increases your body’s dopamine levels—the hormone that improves your memory and motivation. So basically having an orgasm is the gift that keeps on giving.

It burns calories
Don’t feel like hitting the gym? Grab your guy and head to the bedroom. A 30-minute romp in the sheets can burn upwards of 150 calories. That’s like running a mile on the treadmill!

It de-stresses you
We’re all stressed to the max—and all that worry releases the stress hormone cortisol. The problem with cortisol? Having too much of it in your bloodstream can lead to everything from high blood sugar to weight gain. When you get your freak on, it helps you relax, lowering the stress levels in your body.

It keeps you healthy

Regular sex with your guy can actually prevent cold, thanks to the hormone prolactin. This hormone has an important role in strengthening your immune system by increasing the production of T and B lymphocytes (aka immune cells). We’ll take that over chicken soup any day.

It helps you sleep
When you have sex, the cuddle hormone oxytocin is released. That increases your bond with your guy, but it also helps you sleep.

It’s good for your heart
The hormone testosterone is usually associated with big-muscled dudes, but our bodies make it, too. Sex helps increase the release of the hormone, which in turn improves your energy level and strengthens vital body parts, like your muscles, bones and heart

Ngozi Nwosu and an ailing health sector

NGOSI NWOSU (before ailment)
TWO weeks ago, ailing Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu finally got on a flight to London, United Kingdom, where she is reportedly receiving treatment for a kidney malfunction. Before her departure, and probably due to the fact that she is a well-known public figure, several harrowing details about her health had circulated in the news media. The most distressing of such details was her reported desperation for money to offset the anticipated cost of her treatment in the United Kingdom. Eventually, she was able to proceed abroad only after the Lagos State Government came up with the balance required after a spirited fund-raising drive by Ms. Nwosu’s friends and associates had come up short.
We have no doubt that the Lagos State Government has acted in good faith, and we wish to commend it for its generosity. We also note the sacrifice of close friends and associates of Ms. Nwosu and total strangers who responded generously to the request for financial support. Nevertheless, while genuinely thanking all those who came to the actress’s support, and while wishing Ms. Nwosu herself a quick recovery, it is important that the moral of her travails is not lost on us.
The first pertinent observation is that the main reason that news of Ms Nwosu’s situation made the front pages and grabbed our attention is because of her status as a public figure. Had she been a regular Nigerian, unmoored from the media and national circuits of information, we would have been completely oblivious of her plight. This point is worth stressing because, as we speak, there are thousands of Nigerians nursing various kinds of ailments and perishing quietly in remote villages across the country. We know they exist because they are our friends, associates and family members, and we are pained by their plight because we are generally helpless in dealing with it.
This brings us to the second observation, which is that, for the most part, the diseases that are mowing thousands of Nigerians down actually belong in the caliber of ailments for which cure is now generally available, especially in other African countries at comparable levels of socio-economic development. Ghana is a good example. One major problem in Nigeria is that of insufficient diagnosis. A related issue is that even when diagnoses are correctly and timeously done, care is not readily available due to the scandalous and totally shameful state of most of our public hospitals and dispensaries.
A third observation, and a regrettable one at that, is that in true reactionary middle class Nigerian fashion, our response to a profoundly social problem has been pointedly individual. Meaning that instead of collectively putting pressure on the government and our democratic representatives at various levels to commit sufficient resources to the rehabilitation of our public hospitals, we have gone instead for private solutions that may work in the short term, but are guaranteed to fail in the long. Hence, rather than commit, say, to retooling and rejuvenating the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, or the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), we would rather wait for a medical emergency to arise, then hope that, at the eleventh hour, the sick can be spirited to London, New York or New Delhi, as the case may be. The names of Nigerians who have died in various foreign hospitals over the past twelve calendar months alone are too numerous to mention, and should be a source of embarrassment to any country that takes its sovereignty seriously. How, we wonder, can a country comprising so many intelligent people be content with such wretched lives of desperation?
As it is with our hospitals, so it is with our roads, our universities, security and municipal services, and general law and order. Instead of investing in solutions that are proven to work for all and sundry, we opt for arrangements and palliatives that, at best, only postpone the evil day.
NGOZI NWOSU     ( in uk for treatment)
We are happy that Ms. Nwosu was able to secure financial support to obtain treatment, and we hope that she will return home soon as her old zestful self. At the same time, we are sad that yet another Nigerian needed private assistance and handout from a state government in order to take care of her health. This is not the way things are done in all decent countries across the world, and no Nigerian citizen- highly or lowly placed - should have to depend on the generosity of either the government or private individuals for his or health. The way to avoid this is to invest massively in our health sector so that Nigerians of various stripes can find cure at home. The time to commence that urgently required investment is now.

Boko Haram attacks prison, frees all inmates

BOKO HARAM

SUSPECTED members of the Boko Haram sect on Friday blew up the prison in Gwoza Local Government, setting free all the prisoners.
Saturday Tribune learnt that a civilian around the emir’s palace, where the prison is located, was killed by the gunmen while they were freeing the prisoners. However, an official confirmation of the actual number of casualties could not be obtained in Maiduguri, as the Commissioner of Police, Yuguda Abdullahi, could not be reached on his telephone line. Also, attempts to get prison officials in Maiduguri to know the specific number of prisoners that escaped did not yield results.Residents however, told the Saturday Tribune on telephone that the gunmen attacked the prison between 7.00 p.m. and freed all the prisoners.“We were just coming out of the mosque when we heard the sound of heavy explosion and gunfire around the palace. We all ran to our homes only to come out this morning and learn that the Boko Haram group came and blew the prison and freed all the prisoners,” Malam Isah Yawulbi said.
