children should be restricted while driving, FRSC cautions parents
Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr Osita Chidoka, on Saturday cautioned parents to restrict children to the back seat while driving.
Speaking in Abuja at commission’s monthly jogging, Osita said the caution became necessary to prevent children from injury or death that might arise from accidents.
He said, “Adopt the culture of safety in the house; once you adopt the culture of making sure that the child is properly restrained, that child will take it to wherever he goes.
“Unrestrained children in the car are a source of great danger, I know that no father or mother would like to see harm come upon their child.
“Make sure that the child does not press button in the car that leads to more danger.”
President, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Mr Ademola Olorunfemi, who was the special guest at the exercise, also called for adequate protection of children.
He said the strength of a nation was measured by its population, particularly the youth, calling on all stakeholders to join the ‘Use of Appropriate Car Restraints for Children’ campaign.
“The campaign is for our common good, it affects everybody; accident does not know colour, religion, race or age,” he said.
The theme of the exercise was ‘Walking for Safety of the Children in the Vehicles’.
